The Forks Riverwalk is open for Family Fishing Fun on September 6th

Winnipeg, MB, August 20, 2014: The Urban Angler Partnership and Generation Next Angler will host a free Urban Fishing Derby in support of Marymound on Saturday, September 6th at The Forks Assiniboine Riverwalk from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

“We were concerned the event might have to be cancelled due to the high river levels,” says Mardy Yager, Manager Fund Development for Marymound.  “Fortunately this year, the river cooperated in time for fishing enthusiasts to come out and enjoy a great day!”

Todd Longley, professional fishing guide of Cabela’s Pro Staff and owner/operator of City Cats heads up the day’s event as fishers of all ages and skill-levels take their positions along the river walkway casting out a line in hopes of hooking the biggest fish, and the grand prize–a new boat and trailer. Last year, one lucky youth won a brand new fishing boat complete with motor. A total of $10,000 in prizes is available to be won.

The Urban Angler Partnership promotes the sport of angling and offers city dwellers the opportunity to fish without having to leave the city. Generation Next Angler encourages families to fish together, so it’s a perfect fit with Marymound, a 103-year-old child welfare agency that helps children and families in need.

It’s the third year Marymound has partnered with the event and many of its supporters and children in care participate by collecting pledges on behalf of the organization. An enthusiastic 10-year-old boy was the top collector in 2013, with over $200 in pledges.

Registration starts at 9:00 a.m. at The Forks Marina. For more information, or to obtain a pledge form, contact Mardy Yager at 204-336-5293 or visit https://www.marymound.com/main/giving/special-events/.

In lieu of an entry fee, participants are encouraged to provide a donation to Marymound.
