Special day camp engages youth to experience healthy food and nature.
August 5, 2014– The Assiniboine Park Conservancy has created a special summer day program for Marymound youth. The new day camp, called Foodology started in late July and connects kids with nature and outdoor education experiences to promote nutrition and healthy food choices. Twenty youth are participating in two, five-day outdoor learning experiences focusing on gardening, harvesting and preparation of healthy foods along with a visit to the zoo.
“Our staff is already seeing some incredible results and special moments as these children discover many firsts in their lives,” says Scott Gray, Director, Park Programming for Assiniboine Park Conservancy.
Marymound children from Marygrove, Sinclair, and Ji-Zhaabwiing’s Little Wolves unit have been having a great time at camp, learning about plants and flowers in the Conservatory, milking goats and feeding alpacas at Aurora Farm – in addition to visiting the zoo. Enthusiastic youth have also learned how to chop vegetables and plant a vegetable garden, and cook their own lunch and snacks from veggie ricepaper wraps to fresh Pico de Gallo (authentic Mexican salsa), to making pizza in an outdoor oven.
Another group of Marymound kids will get to experience the Foodology camp during the second last week of August, making this a summer to remember.
